Wooden Playground FAQ

Answers to common questions about wooden playground durability, safety, EN 1176, surfacing, maintenance, installation and project planning.

Four common myths about wooden playgrounds

Myth 1: Wooden playgrounds are not durable

Not necessarily. Service life depends on timber quality, moisture control, surface protection, drainage, anchoring and periodic inspection. Well-designed outdoor timber systems can provide long-term performance when installed and maintained correctly.

Myth 2: Wooden playgrounds are expensive to maintain

Timber does require inspection and periodic surface care, but maintenance is predictable. Connections, moving parts, surfacing and metal components also require inspection on any playground, regardless of the main material.

Myth 3: Wooden playgrounds are not user-friendly

Rounded timber elements create a natural tactile surface and generally heat up less aggressively than exposed metal under strong sun. Good machining, smooth edges and correct detailing are essential.

Myth 4: Wooden playgrounds cannot be environmentally responsible

Wood is a renewable material when sourced responsibly. Project sustainability also depends on product lifetime, repairability, coatings, transport and the ability to replace individual components rather than the entire system.

Frequently asked questions

What does a professional playground manufacturer provide?

A manufacturer develops the equipment, adapts layouts to the site, prepares product information and coordinates production, delivery and installation planning. For professional projects, the surrounding safety area and surfacing must be considered together with the equipment.

Why choose a wooden playground?

Wooden playgrounds are often selected for parks, hotels, schools and residential developments because they combine a natural appearance with flexible design possibilities. They can work especially well in landscape-led outdoor projects.

Which play activities can be included?

Depending on the model, a project can include towers, bridges, slides, swings, climbing walls, rope activities, balance elements and themed structures. The final combination should match the available area, age group and expected capacity.

Are wooden playgrounds safe?

Safety depends on the complete system: equipment design, manufacturing quality, correct assembly, safety clearances, impact-attenuating surfacing and periodic inspection. Project layouts are developed with EN 1176 requirements in mind.

What is EN 1176?

EN 1176 is the European series of standards covering safety requirements and test methods for playground equipment. Tender or project requirements may also request model-specific certificates or third-party documentation.

How is the ground prepared?

Ground preparation depends on the foundations, drainage, final surfacing and site conditions. Unless a separate scope is agreed, the project owner or site contractor should ensure that the base and surrounding area are prepared according to the approved layout and technical requirements.

How is safety surfacing selected?

The surfacing system must be suitable for the critical fall height of the selected equipment. Rubber tiles or other impact-attenuating systems may be used where required. Material type and thickness must be confirmed for the specific project.

Important: the playground should be opened only after equipment installation, anchoring, safety zones and the required impact-attenuating surface have been checked.

Can the playground be customised?

Yes. Modular combinations can be adapted to different site dimensions, user capacities and project concepts. Site dimensions, intended age group and expected number of children are the best starting information.

Do you supply hotels, schools and construction projects?

Yes. Elysee works with hotels, schools, residential developments, construction companies, landscape projects and other professional buyers.

Do you deliver and install internationally?

Delivery and installation can be planned according to project location, order size and site readiness. Commercial terms and installation responsibilities are confirmed in the project quotation.

What information is needed for a proposal?

Please send the project location, approximate dimensions, age group, expected child capacity and current ground condition. A site photograph, landscape plan or simple sketch helps us prepare more relevant alternatives.
